RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Problems affecting the vaginal tract in diabetic women are very often neglected. The efficacy and safety of three gynecological treatments in diabetic women have been assessed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-blind randomized progressive trial on 48 diabetic women affected by vaginal dryness, dyspareunia, and recurrent Candida infections was carried out. The ICIQ Vaginal Symptoms (ICIQ-VS) questionnaire was administered. RESULTS: The analysis of the parameters of ICIQ-VS questionnaire among the three groups showed significant difference only for "dragging pain" (p = 0.0 19) and "soreness" (p = 0.028). In all groups and for all parameters of the questionnaire, improvement of symptoms was observed. In particular, in Group 1 for all symptoms a highly significant difference was observed, to support the already known benefits of the products and of the proposed combination. Significant improvement was also observed in Group 2. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed treatment with DermoXEN® Ultracalming Special for diabetics and DermoXEN® Vitexyl vaginal gel exert effective moisturizing and soothing action. Indeed, the aforementioned products have been proven effective for the main gynecological problems of diabetic women.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pruritus can be defined as an unpleasant cutaneous sensation associated with the immediate desire to scratch. In particular external intimate zone could be hit by pruritus genitalis because of several reasons (bacterial infection, fungal infection, stress, bad intimate behavior, synthetic intimate clothes). AIM: The aim of the study was to compare the efficacy of Dermoxen® Lenitiva cream versus a methylprednisolone aceponate 0.1% based cream in treating pruritus of the external genitalia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Independent, randomized, double-blind, controlled trial in two University affiliated Italian Hospitals. 80 women, affected by aspecific pruritus genitalis with negative vaginal swab for bacterial or fungal infections or other pathogenic causes of itching, were selected and blindly treated by Dermoxen® Lenitiva cream or methylprednisolone aceponate 0.1% based cream. The main outcome measures were: the reduction of sensation of pruritus, evaluated by a visual analog scale (VAS) pain score, and improvement of intimate wellness sensation, and comfort during sexual intercourse, frequency and severity of adverse reactions. RESULTS: Significant reduction of itching sensation was verified for each treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Based on our results, DermoXen® Lenitiva vaginal cream showed efficacy so as methylprednisolone aceponate 0.1% based cream for itching treatment on external female genitalia and improved intimate comfort and comfort in sexual intercourse.

RESUMO

Systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) is a disease of unknown cause, the hallmark of which is induration of the skin. This bad condition of the skin influences negatively the quality of life of patients with scleroderma. The aim of the study was to verify the efficacy of two formulations, specifically designed to wash, moisturize and soothe the scleroderma skin. An independent, randomized, double blind, controlled trial was conducted in the Department of Rheumatology of "A. Galateo" Hospital in San Cesario di Lecce. Forty-six women affected by scleroderma, and treated with Iloprost every month, were divided into two groups: group 1 followed a specific treatment with cleansing formulation only, group 2 followed a combined treatment with the cleansing solution and the moisturizing solution. In addition, a third group was evaluated: 14 women, who did not undergo intravenous Iloprost therapy, were treated simultaneously with the cleansing formulation and the moisturizing formulation. The three treatments lasted for 4 weeks. Reduction in trans epidermal water loss (TEWL), increase in moisturization of the stratum corneum, reduction in Skin Score and improvement in quality of life were assessed. Very significant improvement in quality of life occurred in each group. Group 2 obtained very significant improvement in hydration and reduction in skin score and TEWL. The study showed that the daily use of both formulations proved to be effective in washing, hydrating and soothing the skin of patients with scleroderma, especially in association with Iloprost therapy.

RESUMO

In gyrokinetic theory, the quadratic nonlinearity is known to play an important role in the dynamics by redistributing (in a conservative fashion) the free energy between the various active scales. In the present study, the free energy transfer is analyzed for the case of ion temperature gradient driven turbulence. It is shown that it shares many properties with the energy transfer in fluid turbulence. In particular, one finds a (strongly) local, forward (from large to small scales) cascade of free energy in the plane perpendicular to the background magnetic field. These findings shed light on some fundamental properties of plasma turbulence, and encourage the development of large-eddy-simulation techniques for gyrokinetics.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to measure the impact of urban activities on airborne particle dynamics during weekend periods in Brussels urban area. Differences in the granulometry and micromorphology between particles sampled on working days and weekends were studied. We quantified the area, size, number, and the chemistry parameters of the airborne particles and compared between Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. We report and analyze data on airborne particles up to PM10, measured in the Brussels region from October 2002 to September 2003. Our investigation reveals detailed information regarding chemical composition of the airborne particles over the weekend period in the Brussels urban area. Furthermore, the majority of the airborne particles in the Brussels region may belong to sources geographically outside the (in situ) Brussels area.

RESUMO

A spectral analysis of anisotropic magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, in presence of a constant magnetic field, is presented using high-resolution direct numerical simulations. A method of decomposing the spectral space into ring structures is presented and the energy transfers between such rings are studied. This decomposition method takes into account the angular dependency of energy transfers in anisotropic systems, while it allows one to recover easily the known shell-to-shell energy transfers in the limit of isotropic turbulence. For large values of the constant magnetic field, the total-energy transfer appears to be most dominant in the direction perpendicular to the mean magnetic field. The linear transfer due to the constant magnetic also appears to be important in redistributing the energy between the velocity and the magnetic fields.

RESUMO

The main objective of our research was to compare the airborne particle micromorphology and chemistry in the Brussels environment during agriculture working periods in the surrounding farming region. We used specific methods and instrumentation that are adapted to the climate peculiarities of the Brussels region, the period of investigations (12 months) and the proposed objectives. For the agricultural works we defined the following six periods: before sowing, sowing, after sowing, before harvest, harvest and after harvest. The results indicate a possible temporal correlation between agricultural work periods and airborne particle concentration, micromorphology and chemistry in the Brabant-Brussels region. For wheat and corn plant-growth periods, the average particle size, defined as the area obtained by a planar projection of the particulate, showed important variations in time. For sugar beet and endive, the average area size variations are less important. The roughness and sphericity parameters for the growth periods of the four different plants also showed significant differences. Many of the larger particulates (> 10 microm) are aggregates of even finer particles coated with many still finer ones. The airborne particle chemistry averages (atomic percentage At%), showed that three constituents (Si, S and Fe) dominate all the samples (except for particles 3-10 microm in size, which contain a relatively large percentage of Al). Applying similar investigation methods to study the correlations between airborne particle dynamics in urban zones and the agriculture working periods in their surrounding regions could be of interest to better understand the complexity of the PM problematic.

RESUMO

We report and analyze data on the PM10 fraction of airborne particles measured at five recording stations in the Brussels region from October 2002 till September 2003. These stations are representative of the various activity sectors of the Brussels urban area. The objective was the determination of the origin of the PM10 particles (particles up to 10 mum) that are recorded in that region in order to follow the EU directives concerning tolerance level of airborne particles concentration. In order to evaluate the impacts of local and external factors that inject solid particles in the atmosphere of Brussels we compared concentration data from working and not working (holidays) periods. Moreover, we also compared concentrations from periods of agricultural activity and rest in the Brabant provinces surrounding the Brussels region for various crop types. The results lead to the conclusion that the impact or urban traffic is rather limited while that of the agricultural activities is important. Moreover, there appears a clear-cut distinction between different types of crops.

RESUMO

Treatment of rats with the glucocorticoid dexamethasone causes an increase in the activity of cytosolic spermidine N1-acetyltransferase both in the spleen and thymus, but not, however, in liver, kidney or lung. The induced spermidine N1-acetyltransferase activity in the spleen catalyses acetylation of spermidine as well as spermine and sym-norspermidine, but not of diamines and histones. The enzyme induction depends on the dose of dexamethasone, and is suppressed by cycloheximide, which suggests that de novo protein synthesis is required for the action of this glucocorticoid. N1-acetylspermidine accumulates in the spleen after dexamethasone treatment, while spermidine progressively decreases and is partly converted into putrescine, the content of which transiently increases. In accordance with previous reports, dexamethasone was found to cause a rapid and large fall in the activity of spleen ornithine decarboxylase which was effected via the appearance of an inhibitor of the enzyme. Glucocorticoids exert large catabolic effects on lymphoid tissues, and further selectively affect the activities of spermidine N1-acetyltransferase and ornithine decarboxylase in the thymus and spleen. These latter selective responses may represent an important early event in lymphoid tissue response to glucocorticoid hormones.

RESUMO

N1-Acetylspermidine is not detectable in rat heart, but its content greatly increases after a single injection of isoprenaline (10 mg/kg), reaching a concentration of about 10 nmol/g of tissue 4 h after the treatment. Part of the accumulated N1-acetylspermidine was split to putrescine. Isoprenaline also caused an increase of N1-acetylspermidine in the spleen, where its concentration increased 3.5-fold 6 h after the catecholamine. The accumulation of N1-acetylspermidine was dependent on the dose of isoprenaline in both the heart and the spleen, and was strongly inhibited by beta-antagonists and inhibitors of protein synthesis.

RESUMO

The separation of dansyl derivatives of N1- and N8-acetylspermidine by reversed-phase column liquid chromatography is reported. The influence of organic solvents on the retention of acetylspermidines was studied. Best resolutions were achieved using a C18 column and a ternary mobile phase composed of water, methanol and acetonitrile. The precolumn derivatization method permitted the detection of picomole quantities. A method for the determination of acetylspermidines in rat tissues is described.

RESUMO

The effect of a single administration of catecholamines on ornithine decarboxylase activity and polyamine biosynthesis in the rat spleen was investigated. Isoproterenol elicited a dose-dependent increase in spleen ODC activity which reached a maximum 4 hr after the administration of the drug. Putrescine content was also found to increase within a few hours, whereas S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase activity and spermidine and spermine levels did not change significantly. Adrenaline and noradrenaline proved to be even more effective in increasing splenic ODC activity than isoproterenol. alpha- and beta-adrenergic antagonists prevented the ODC increase by catecholamines to a different extent.
